00 KITS - WHEELS - 18 July 2006
gifts

We have always marketed our kits complete with wheels, initially exclusively from Romford, but as some of their wheels have been discontinued we have replaced them with Markit equivalents.

However there is now a much wider choice of wheels on the market including diameter and spoke configurations not previously available as well as many specialist wheelsets for specific loco classes. In view of these developments we will now market our 00 kits without wheels but will still offer a separate Wheelset for those modellers, who have no personal preferences for alternative manufacturers.

Our Wheelset will consist of Romford wheels where available (as the kits were originally designed for these) and/ or suitable Markit wheels of an appropriate diameter to meet our original design.

If you would like to select alternative wheels please refer to the wheel matrix to determine what diameters the kit was originally designed for to ensure they will fit.

We hope this will offer all our customers what they want – either our standard Wheelset or the ability to choose wheels of their own preference.

7mm RTR - is this the big breakthrough? MRJ Review - 22 September 2005

NEW BR03 Ready to Run
"How does it look? The immediate impression is, absolutely gorgeous. Modern design technology ensures dimensional accuracy and faithful proportions...The quality of finish is exquisite and the ‘open-the-box’ moment is one to savour. The eye is immediately drawn to the chequer pattern on the footplate, see-through radiator grilles and jackshaft guards, lost-wax radiator fillers, exquisite cab interior detail (fully painted, of course), etched window frames and high-quality glazing material. Even in squeaky-clean paintwork, with perfectly applied wasp stripes, it exhibits the blend of dinkiness and chunky solidity that has always characterised the 03s. The overall level of detail is generous, particularly below the footplate....More importantly, how does this shunter run? The short answer is, very well indeed. A low-revving Buhler motor – not the quietest you can find, but oddly like a real 03 in the way it sounds – gives assured performance and stately progress at shunting speeds, as well as more than adequate tractive power...So is this the way to attract modellers – especially those short on time but long on good intentions – who feel they can afford £500 for a pretty little shunting engine? The answer is an unequivocal yes. For what you get for your money the price is extremely reasonable and of course it comes (unlike the products of our home workshops) fully guaranteed. Even experienced modellers could and perhaps should be tempted by this kind of instant gratification. For the tyro wishing to test the 7mm waters without wishing to waste time and money on an iffy kit, this RTR 03 is well nigh perfect . . .taken from Review by Tim Shackleton in MRJ "

Model and gift maker DJH Engineering has extended its premises and website as demand for their niche products goes global.

The Derwentside manufacturer, which employs 45 staff, is expanding to meet demand from around the world for its range of products - including corporate gifts, precision built scale model trains and plane and "movers" for board games.

DJH, which blends traditional craft skills with modern technology, has completed a 1,500 sq m extension to its existing premises on Consett Business Park.

New customers are now discovering DJH thanks to a new website, created with the help of Business Link County Durham (BLCD).

Sales manager Carole Whitfield said: "Our order book is full for the next three months and the new website is already playing an important part in our growth.

"We are in a highly competitive market and under threat, in particular, from the Far East with its low labour rates.

"But we find we are winning-out against foreign competition on the quality and finish of our product and reliability of our service.

"We have had great advice and financial support from BLCD's IT scheme and couldn't have done this without them. They realised what the business needed, matched us with three potential designers and we chose Edward Robertson of Darlington. It has been a real team effort and we are delighted with the results."

The intricate working model trains, designed and manufactured for builders and collectors, are precision engineered and can cost up to £2,500.

A range of aviation giftware is supplied to individual enthusiasts and the aviation industry and the company also produces bespoke corporate gifts for a wide range of blue chip companies.

DJH is currently working on a model of Gateshead's Millennium Bridge for Gateshead Council and previously made a miniature of the Angel of the North for the Tate Art Gallery.

Creating precision working models demands a blend of skills and the company places great emphasis on training.

Business Link County Durham IT manager Dennis Niccol said: "It is important to get to know the business so that we can help to match the company to the right designer as it is likely that they will work together for some time."
